Porcelain tile is a popular flooring choice among homeowners, thanks in part to its beauty (the material comes in a real rainbow of colours) and in part to its stain and moisture resistance. Porcelain tiles are long-lasting and ideal for children with asthma. They are also one of the simplest floors to maintain. Porcelain tiles, when properly cared for, do not necessitate the use of expensive speciality cleaners. Decorative porcelain floor tiles as well as white porcelain floor tiles form a popular choice among buyers. Though glazed porcelain floor tiles lose their lustre over time, anybody can learn how to care for them and restore their natural sparkle.

For general cleaning of polished and glazed porcelain tiles, follow these guidelines.

Materials Needed:

  • Sponge/Mop
  • Bucket of water
  • 1/4 cup vinegar with 7 litres of hot water, or porcelain tile cleanser or all-purpose cleaner for the home

Procedure:

  1. Sweep or vacuum the floor to remove any loose debris or dust. Instead of a broom, use an untreated, dry dust mop.
  2. Wipe down the floor with a gentle cleaning solution. The detergent concentration should be half of that used on an unpolished porcelain tile floor.
  3. Clean water should be used to rinse the porcelain tiled floor.
  4. Dry thoroughly to maximise shine and prevent water marks.
  5. Once dry, use a piece of cheesecloth to buff the clean porcelain tile to a high gloss.

What to avoid:

  1. While glazed porcelain ceramic tile is quite durable, there are a few materials and procedures you should avoid:
  2. Never use a product that contains ammonia or bleach (or any other acid-based cleaning); these might change the colour of the tile and/or stain the grout.
  3. Use oil-based detergents and wax cleansers at all times.
  4. Never use dye or colouring-containing cleansers on unglazed porcelain.
  5. Steel wool should never be used to clean porcelain tile because minute steel particles might become entrenched in the tile and grout, eventually generating rust stains.
  6. Hard bristles or scrub brushes should never be used since they can scratch the tile surface.
